I'd say, in general, that socks are an under appreciated clothing item ... pretty much taken for granted.  Perhaps (gasp), the sock is the most under appreciated clothing item of all.  (Men have debated this hotly for eons, you well know.)

But there is one areas where socks are given the props they deserve...

The sport of soccer.

First of all, every player participating in an organized soccer game HAS to wear shinguards.  Referees won't even let you play without them.

Second of all, you're supposed to wear socks over your shin guards.  They're REQUIRED.

Third, due to the logistics of covering up those massive shinguards --- in soccer, our socks are ABSOLUTELY HUGE.  And they're fancy to boot.

So in soccer, they're fancy, they're huge, and they're a required part of the uniform.  I'd say we give socks the honor they deserve.
