The Questionable History of the Pinnie? (are you kidding?)

As much fun as it is to talk about underwear, either directly or indirectly, we figured this week --- it was time to move on.

(sorry to disappoint you, folks.)  ;)

So this week we're changing gears and focusing on tools you can use in your pursuit of soccer excellence.  Simple, but important tools ... the pinny, and the scrimage vest.  But -- can you guess which one of which has a questionable history?

The "scrimage vest," has a nice, respectable name.  It's a vest. It's for scrimages.  And that kind of has some cool to it.  Nothing but respectable sports history there, folks.

But "pinny"  !?!?  Who actually wants to wear something with a name like "pinny"?

"Hey boys!  Go grab your pinnies and lets get this started!"

That just doesn't sound right.  Does it to you?

Did you know "pinny" actually means:

A sleeveless DRESS, or decorative garmet, or "protective APRON".

And thus the sordid past of the pinny is revealed... it basically comes from old-time, pin-on-protective-apron/dress thing-a-mabobs.  But there's more...

Did you know "pinny" is actually short for...

PINAFORE?

Right now, there is someone somewhere who needs to be smacked for this.

Soccer is, essentially, pure cool-ness in sports form.  And it should never have anything to do with some "pinafore" decorative protective dress/apron/thingy currently called a "pinny".

(sigh)

But what are you going to do?  The item is already entrenched in the soccer establishment.  So of course, we have to sell it ... and this week you can get 10% off of this horrid item (and it's superior partner, the scrimmage vest).

Just go to Pinnies to pick up yours.  And at checkout, plug in the promo code for 10% off your purchase.

Have a great week, folks!

"Gear" vs. "Wear" & Other Fine Topics...

When does undergear officially become underwear?

Where is this mysterious dividing line where the transformation takes place?  Does lace have to be involved?  What about spandex?

....

Last week we had a special on outerwear.  That's all fine and dandy.  But we made some remarks about underwear and some people got hot under the collar about this, that and the other...

And then there was some heated debate about undergear versus underwear... it got pretty ugly around here.

So -- to satisfy all the all the parties involved -- we figured we'd better just run a special on underwear this week.
(Oops -- I mean undergear.)

Just visit our undergear page at Soccersaurus.com and take your pick of the items.  Enter the following coupon code at checkout, and you're good to go for 10% any and all undergear on our website!

Hope that makes everyone happy!

What It Takes to Be the Best! (Part 2 of 2)

So you've got the drive to climb to the top and be the best? Well... guess what... it ain't gonna happen if you don't pay the price!

But -- if you have the drive, the talent, and are willing to go the distance --- you might just make it there.

Today's post is Part 2 in an article from our friends at ONE on ONE Soccer®, written by the one-and-only Glenn "Mooch" Myernick (former coach to the US Men's Olympic Team and assistant coach to the US Men's World Cup Team)!

In this article Mooch talks about what it actually takes to make it to the highest levels in soccer. Read it and re-read it. Take it to heart. This is good stuff, folks! Read part 2 below...

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE BEST! - PART 2

Second, you must have a strong COMMITMENT to succeed.

This means that you must dedicate yourself to daily training at the highest level you can find. The Tuesday, Thursday training and game on Saturday approach will NOT get you to the higher levels of the game by any stretch. It must be a daily commitment on your part to put yourself in a situation where you are receiving quality training and competitive matches.

Most times, though, for the young player this is not just a commitment of the individual but to the parents and family as well. It might take Mom or Dad driving you several hours to and from training and matches on a regular basis to give you the best opportunity to grow as a player. If this is the case, then so be it ... if you truly want to be the best.

If you really want something bad enough you will need to fight and battle for it, it just won't happen because you want it to happen.

Third, you must SACRIFICE certain things.

You will need to eat, live and breathe the game in order to be the best. This might mean being away from family/friends due to traveling with a team for training/matches or not being able to do certain things in general due to your commitment to your goals as a player. This is often the most difficult element to all of this because it really tests your commitment level and attitude.

Am I willing to sacrifice not going to the school dance on Friday due to a tournament this weekend? Am I committed enough to my development to sacrifice going to the dance because I really love playing the game that much? These are the questions that you will need to ask yourself all the time in order to become the player that you desire to be.

The combination of all three of these elements is what typically creates a national team level player.

Along with these three elements, the game today also places several demands on players. Whether it is at the international or recreational levels, the game today is all about SPEED!

How quickly can you solve problems on the playing field and adapt or adjust to the situation. The game not only demands physical speed but technical speed as well. How quickly can you get the ball under control, make a decision and do something positive with it? This is the technical speed that is needed as well as the physical speed which is how fast can you get from point A to point B.

Can you be lacking in one area of the game and still play at a high level?

Yes, you certainly can and an excellent example of that is Frankie Heyduk. To watch Frankie in a technical training session you might think, this guy lacks the polish of his teammates with the ball at his feet, but, at the World Cup in 2002 we could not afford to NOT have him on the field because of the other elements that he brought to the game. He is so committed to doing his job and is willing to sacrifice himself for the better of the team. His pure speed, athleticism and work ethic was something that makes up for his lack of pure technical ability. And because of that he was one of our better performers last summer. So, you don't necessarily need the pure technical skills, but you will need to make up for it somehow.

Do you feel that you possess these different qualities and are getting overlooked at the club or ODP levels?

If this is the case, take it upon yourself and find out what else you need to do to get you where you want to be. Ask your club coaches, ODP coaches or the staff at ONE on ONE Soccerâ for help in getting noticed. If you have what it takes the ODP and national team programs will find you! Just do your part and play in situations that you keep asking yourself, what do I need to do to survive at this level?

For That Guy You Love to Hate...

We've got a couple jokes this week about that guy you love to hate...

Here goes.

Have you heard the top 4 reasons to become a ref?
  1. You love soccer, but can't quite understand the rules.
  2. You have the strange desire to run aimlessly around in the wind, rain and snow.
  3. You love the sound of verbal abuse.
  4. You find it hard to make decisions -- and whenever you do -- you're always wrong.
Or have you heard this story?

...An Assistant Referee turns up for a game with both his ears bandaged up. "What happened to your ears?" asks the Referee. The Assistant Referee replies: "Yesterday I was ironing my Referee’s top when the phone rang. I accidentally answered the iron."

"That explains one ear, but what happened to the other one?" continues the Referee.

"Well - I had to call the doctor!" says the assistant referee.

How about one more?

...A young Referee was leaving the DRA’s office late one evening when he found the ARA standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. "Listen," said the ARA, "this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work?" "Certainly," said the young Referee. He turned the machine on, inserted the paper, and pressed the start button.

"Excellent, excellent!" said the ARA as his paper disappeared inside the machine. "I just need one copy."

:)

Okay... well, that's enough of that!

By the way --- you can get 10% off all referee gear at Soccersaurus through next Tuesday!  Just enter this coupon code at checkout:
